These two adverbs can easily be mixed up by students, since they sound similar and their spelling is almost the same. However, “Especially” and “Specially” possess different meanings as we will see below.
Especially can be a synonym for “particularly” or “above all” because that is exactly what it means. It can also be used to emphasize an adjective. Examples:
- I am quite keen on Asian cinema, especially Japanese films
- Today’s lesson is especially interesting, just wait and see
Specially, on the other hand, is used to speak about the specific purpose of something, and it can be translated as “specifically”. Examples:
- This car prototype was specially designed for the Sultan of Brunei
- This suit was specially made for me to attend the ceremony.
Remember that the pronunciation also differs:
- especially: /ɪˈspeʃəli/
- specially: /ˈspeʃ.əl.i/)
