Me or I?

Many times, especially when we are speaking, we are not sure whether to use the subjective pronoun (I) or the objective pronoun (me). Today we are sharing with you a few tips and examples to clarify this issue.

The pronoun “I” is used as the subject of the sentence, alongside with the other subjective pronouns (you, he, she, we, they) or proper nouns if necessary. Examples:

  • You and I are in the same boat (not “you and me are in the same boat”)
  • Michael and I enjoyed the concert (not “Michael and me enjoyed the concert”)

The pronoun “me” is used as the object of the verb, along with the other objective pronouns such as you, him, her, us or them. For instance:

  • My parents gave my brother and me a surprise (not “my parents gave my brother and I a surprise”)
  • He told him and me not to tell anyone (not “he told him and I not to tell anyone”)

Additionally, “me” and the other objective pronouns can be used as the object of a preposition, for example:

  • Dad wants to stay with John and me (not “dad wants to stay with John and I”)
  • This present is for you and me (not this present is for you and I”)

We hope you find this useful, now let’s see a few more examples:
